Kingston, New York - September 24, 2026 - Republican congressional candidate Jackie Auringer issued a sharp rebuke today, accusing Representative Pat Ryan of utilizing a House reimbursement program to fund his families full-time lavish Washington lifestyle at the expense of taxpayers.

“Pat Ryan has a dirty secret, he and his family joined the millions of New Yorkers fleeing the state - but unlike everyone else, Hudson Valley taxpayers are picking up the tab,” said Auringer.

According to House data published by the Times Union, Ryan has claimed more than $60,000 in taxpayer-funded lodging reimbursements for Washington housing since 2023. Auringer contends that these claims represent a misuse of public funds, making Ryan the first member of Congress to be directly challenged on whether he sidestepped primary residence rules to secure the subsidies.

"Yesterday's Times Union reported that Congressman Ryan has taken more than $60,000 from taxpayers, and he certified each claim himself," Auringer said. "So the question is simple: was this lodging for official travel, or was it to support where he and his family lives? If he believes his claims were proper, he should release his vouchers and certifications and let the public see what he signed. And if the review finds any of that money was not eligible, he should face legal consequences."

Auringer, who is running for New York's 18th Congressional District, is demanding that Ryan answer one straightforward question regarding his living arrangements:

Why are Hudson Valley taxpayers subsidizing your entire family to live full time in Washington, D.C.?

With public records indicating Ryan’s net worth in the millions, Auringer questioned why public funds are being used to support his household. "The reimbursement exists for a Member's lodging when traveling on official business, not to support his family’s full-time fancy lifestyle in Washington," Auringer said.

Auringer has formally requested reviews from the Office of Congressional Conduct and the House Ethics Committee.

Concluded Auringer, “Is it any wonder why Pat Ryan has lost touch with the district and of the values that Hudson Valley voters believe. When elected, I’ll always stay rooted in the communities and neighborhoods and never abuse the taxpayer trust.”
