Pat Ryan Moved Back to DC & Forgot to Pay His New York Taxes

Just weeks after Ryan forgot where his family lives comes news he forgot to pay his 2021 state taxes

2026 State Tax Warrant Adds New Questions to Ongoing Residency Controversy

KINGSTON, NY - October 13, 2026 - New York State has filed a tax warrant against Congressman Pat Ryan. The warrant, recorded in Ulster County on July 10, 2026, names Ryan and his wife, Rebecca, for $1,580.22 in unpaid 2021 taxes: $1,062 in tax and $518.22 in interest. A warrant is an enforceable judgment, and the state's own document says the full amount was "wholly unpaid" when it was filed for taxes from 2021.

The 2021 taxes came due in spring 2022. Ryan was sworn into Congress that September. The assessment and collection process that followed played out while he was a sitting member, and this summer it ended in a warrant.

"The minute Pat Ryan got elected he forgot he was a New Yorker”, said Auringer. “Ryan dodged his New York taxes, took a $12,400 break on a house he doesn't live in - all while taxpayers pay over $60,000 for his fancy home in D.C. where he really lives."

The numbers come from Ryan's own record. His Gardiner property receives a $12,400 veterans exemption, which New York grants only for a primary residence. The Times Union reported Ryan has collected more than $60,000 in taxpayer-funded lodging in Washington, and even though he features them in television ads, Ryan refuses to answer questions about where he lives with his family.

The warrant is a public record. Voters are waiting for answers on when the liability was assessed, why it reached the warrant stage, and whether it has been paid.

"When a Hudson Valley family doesn't pay its taxes, the state comes after them and often fines them," Auringer said. "Did Pat Ryan receive special treatment? Either way, Pat Ryan should pay up, pay back the $60,000 taxpayers handed him for Washington, and pay his fair share of property taxes."
