Auringer Backs Plan to Suspend Federal Gas Tax

Calls on Ryan to support immediate relief at the pump for Hudson Valley families

KINGSTON, NY, May 12, 2026 — Jackie Auringer (R-C), candidate for Congress in New York's 18th District, today backed President Donald Trump's proposal to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax, saying families across the Hudson Valley need immediate relief from rising costs at the pump.

President Trump has called for suspending the federal gas tax, which is currently 18.4 cents per gallon and would require congressional approval. The proposal comes as gas prices have surged nationally, adding financial pressure on working families, commuters, seniors, small business owners, and tradespeople who depend on their vehicles every day.

"Working families need a break, and suspending the federal gas tax is a step Washington can take right now," said Auringer. "New York is already one of the highest-taxed, highest-cost states in America. Every trip to work, every school drop-off, every run to the grocery store costs more than it should. They need relief now."

Auringer said the gas tax suspension should be part of a broader affordability agenda focused on lowering energy costs, cutting taxes, and ending policies that make life more expensive for middle-class families.

"Pat Ryan does not understand the cost of gas the way working families do because he is not living the daily reality of this district," Auringer said. "He spends his time in Washington while Hudson Valley families are paying the price at the pump. I will always stand with the people who drive to work, run small businesses, heat their homes, and are tired of politicians making life less affordable."

Suspending the federal gas tax would provide direct relief to drivers while Congress considers broader action to address energy costs and inflation. Auringer called on Rep. Pat Ryan to support the proposal and stop putting politics ahead of affordability.

"We need to end the war in Iran as soon as possible, but until that happens Pat Ryan and Congress should do everything possible to lower costs for families," said Auringer.
