Auringer: Pat Ryan Profits From Identity Verification Abroad but Opposes Voter ID at Home

KINGSTON, N.Y. — July 24, 2026 — On Wednesday, Congressman Pat Ryan voted against requiring identification to vote. Yet Ryan owns a stake in Socure, a company that makes money verifying people’s identities using voter records from countries including Uganda, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, and Venezuela.

“Pat Ryan is profiting from identity-verification technology, including technology that relies on voter registries in nations ruled by authoritarian governments,” said Republican congressional candidate Jackie Auringer. “But when it comes to protecting confidence in American elections, he suddenly claims voter identification is unacceptable.”

Socure’s own product documentation states that its identity-verification platform supports government voter registries in Uganda, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, and Venezuela. Ryan’s financial disclosure shows that he owns an interest in the company.

“The question isn’t complicated,” Auringer said. “Pat Ryan profits from a company that verifies people’s identities using voter records around the world. He should explain why he opposes applying that same basic standard to voting here in America.”

Ryan’s position is also at odds with a majority of New Yorkers. A Siena College poll released March 31 found that voters support requiring proof of citizenship when registering and photo identification when voting by a margin of 54% to 36%.

“If Pat Ryan really believes voter ID will disenfranchise millions of voters, then why is his company selling identity-verification services around the world?” concluded Auringer.
